Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold, D.D., sometime Head-Master of Rugby School and Regius Professor of Modern History in the University of Oxford, by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, Dean of Westminster. Ward, Lock & Co., Limited, London, New York and Melbourne. Illustrated with a portrait of Arnold and full-page illustrations. Bound in full red calf as a Wesley College, Sheffield prize binding, with the college arms and motto "Virtus Religio Doctrina" prominently blocked in gilt to the upper board. Gilt foliate borders to both boards, extensively gilt-tooled spine in compartments, black leather title label lettered "Life of Dr. Arnold. Stanley.", gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers and marbled page edges. Leather rubbed and marked in places, with wear at the extremities and some loss of surface colour. At the head of the spine there is localised separation where the spine meets the boards on both sides, with associated wear; the boards remain firmly attached and the volume itself is robust and firmly bound. An old painted shelf number "13" appears towards the foot of the spine. Wesley College, Sheffield prize label to the front pastedown, dated December 1904 and awarded to C. B. Finch for English, Form Va, under Headmaster R. F. Pearson. A later Cliff College Library label and barcode are also present on the front endpapers. Internally the leaves show the expected light toning of age, with the text remaining clean and readily legible. Illustrated throughout, including the portrait frontispiece of Thomas Arnold and views associated with Rugby School. The volume itself carries no printed publication date. The Wesley College prize label provides a firm terminus ante quem, establishing that this Ward, Lock issue was already in circulation by December 1904; accordingly, c. 1904 is an appropriate catalogue date rather than an unsupported exact year. The imprint wording "Ward, Lock & Co., Limited" and the London, New York and Melbourne locations are also consistent with a turn-of-the-century Ward Lock issue. Stanley's biography had first appeared many decades earlier, so this volume is a later illustrated edition rather than an early edition of the work. Stanley's Life and Correspondence remains an important nineteenth-century biography of Thomas Arnold (1795-1842), whose headmastership of Rugby School made him a major figure in the history of British education. Stanley had himself been Arnold's pupil at Rugby and drew extensively upon Arnold's correspondence and testimony from his family, colleagues and former pupils. This copy has particular interest as an educational artefact because Arnold's biography was subsequently presented as a school prize by another British educational institution, Wesley College, Sheffield.
