A detailed biography of the colourful and controversial French adventurer Charles Philippe Hippolyte, Baron de Thierry, who attempted to establish himself as a sovereign ruler in New Zealand during the early nineteenth century. Traces his European background, travels and ambitious colonial schemes, including his dealings with Ngapuhi chief Hongi Hika and missionary Thomas Kendall over the disputed purchase of 40,000 acres of land at Hokianga. Recounts his arrival in New Zealand in 1837, his unsuccessful attempt to establish an independent settlement and his claims to political authority before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. Also explores his later years in Auckland, financial difficulties and involvement in colonial society. Drawing on historical documents and correspondence, the book provides an account of an unusual figure in New Zealand's early European history.…
