Le quattro memorie legate insieme in un volume in mezza tela ottocentesca con titoli dorati sul dorso, in ottavo cm14x21, pp 90 (2), 111 (1), 92, 78 (2); legate in fine 17 tavole litografiche ripiegate (per la prima memoria 9 figure su 3 tavole, per la seconda 24 figure su 4 tavole, per la terza 24 figure su 6 tavole - la prima delle tavole anteposta dal legatore all'ultima della serie precedente, per la quarta 8 figure su 4 tavole). Raffaele Niola fu professore alla Nunziatella dal 1816, e alla fine degli anni '30 direttore delle ferriere di Mongiana progettate da Domenico Fortunato Savino, cui affidò anche il compito di potenziare la fonderia di Ferdinandea, anch'essa sotto la sua direzione. Questa raccolta completa delle Memorie compilate per il Real Collegio Militare di Napoli offre un interessante panorama dei diversi aspetti della produzione d'artiglieria di cui il Niola aveva, come direttore delle suddette fonderie, esperienza diretta. La prima memoria è dedicata allo sfruttamento delle risorse forestali, considerate insieme come fonte di materie prime e come ecosistema: cura e mantenimento degli alberi e dei boschi, stima del rendimento degli appezzamenti, qualità dei legni (quercia, olmo, legni bianchi e resinosi), disboscamento, conservazione dei legnami. La seconda memoria affronta argomenti di geologia e analisi della montagna, ricerca ed estrazione mineraria, metallurgia e siderurgia (ferro, acciaio, rame, stagno, bronzo, piombo). La terza memoria riguarda le tecniche di fabbricazione delle artiglierie: forme di argilla e sabbia, fusione, forni, tornitura, foratura delle anime, ecc. L'ultima memoria tratta della composizione chimica della polvere da sparo, sua fabbricazione, esame, conservazione ecc. Non comune. Onesta legatura ma bell'esemplare, fresco e completo.
