It "is sometimes forgotten that the Princes [of Gwalior] not only provided men and materiel at their own expense during both world wars but also donated considerable sums of money from their own personal wealth and State treasuries". Gwalior's contribution to the war effort, aside from manpower, was indeed remarkable. The India1914 project notes that the Maharaja alone, among many his other donations, supplied 300 beds for the equipment of a hospital ship, "a motor ambulance fleet costing £25,000, a motor transport costing £23,000, nine aeroplanes costing £22,500 founded a convalescent home at Nairobi" and gave £30,000 towards Red Cross gifts for Indian and British troops.
