Add to basketFirst edition of this "finely produced" book (Perkins). It "is sometimes forgotten that the Princes [of Gwalior] not only provided men and materiel at their own expense during both world wars but also donated considerable sums of money from their own personal wealth and State treasuries". Gwalior's contribution to the war effort…, aside from manpower, was indeed remarkable. The India1914 project notes that the Maharaja alone, among many his other donations, supplied 300 beds for the equipment of a hospital ship, "a motor ambulance fleet costing £25,000, a motor transport costing £23,000, nine aeroplanes costing £22,500 founded a convalescent home at Nairobi" and gave £30,000 towards Red Cross gifts for Indian and British troops. The appendices name subscribers to the Gwalior Imperial Indian Relief Fund and the Gwalior "Our Day" Fund. Perkins, p. 380. Budheswar Patil, "The Contribution from the princely states of India during World War 1", India1914. Quarto. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of Maharaja Sir Madho Rao Scindia I of Gwalior and 48 plates, all with captioned tissue guards, tables in text. Original red cloth over bevelled boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, front board gilt-stamped with foliate central panel and coat of arms of Gwalior, decorative endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Pencil signature to first blank recto of Douglas Straight, perhaps Douglas Marshall Straight (19869-1949) CIE, Inspector General of United Provinces in India. Spine sunned, front board a little scratched and with small patch of dampstaining, plates bright: a very good copy.
