Ancien membre des Saisons, l'association républicaine révolutionnaire créée par Blanqui et Barbès, qui avait fomenté l'insurrection ratée de mai 1839, Alfred Raginel est en 1845 à l?origine d?une tentative de fonder une société agricole et industrielle d?inspiration fouriériste. Il publie alors cette plaquette dans laquelle, après un exposé liminaire, figurent en 73 articles les statuts de cette société qui a pour but "d'assurer à tous ses membres la faculté de pouvoir en tout temps employer et utiliser leurs talents, leurs aptitudes, et de retirer de leur travail le meilleur parti possible" (art. 7). "Tous les Sociétaires ont un droit égal dans la consommation et la répartition des produits, des jouissances et des avantages sociaux ; nul n'est moins bien nourri, vêtu, logé, ou soigné, [?], que tel autre de ses co-associés ; la règle des droits c'est la proportionnalité des besoins de chacun" (art. 18). "Le travail est obligatoire" (art. 21). "Resté sans suite, ce projet fut remis à l?ordre du jour par les événements de 1848. Au lendemain du 15 mai 1848, Raginel fonde en effet le Club de la Grande famille, qui s?occupait de propagande démocratique et sociale et prônait la fondation d?un phalanstère en Île-de-France" (Maitron). Proche des idées de Proudhon Raginel est nommé commissaire du gouvernement provisoire de la République en Aveyron, mais sera destitué dès le 10 avril. Il collabore par la suite à plusieurs journaux socialistes. Cette brochure est illustrée d'une large planche lithographiée (26,3 x 40,2 cm) repliée, montée sur onglet, représentant une vue à vol d'oiseau de la Société agricoles et industrielle de la Grande Famille. La disposition des bâtiments de différents usages regroupés (logements, infirmerie, bibliothèque, bureau de la direction, étables, boulangerie, ateliers, etc.) rappelle le projet de Ledoux pour la ville de Chaux et s'inspire tout à la fois des modèles de phalanstères fouriéristes et? des prisons panoptiques.
