[.] De Grandvals versdrama La nouvelle Messaline översattes redan 1772 till svenska av Gustav III:s hovpräst Johan Envallsson. Först vid mitten av 1800-talet utkom en liten upplaga av denna översättning med titeln Messalina (det finns också ett faksimiltryck från slutet av 1960-talet)" (Kurt Wered). - - - "Under 1800-talet utkom i ytterst begränsade upplagor en och annan pornografisk titel, oftast med humoristisk tendens. Det är titlar som "Ode till allas moder" (1839), "Messalina" (1851), "Sådant kan man låta bli" (1863), "Kakamoja" (1872), "Opp med kardusen" (1882), "Knulliaden" (u.å.) med flera. [.] Den tredje högkonjunkturen ägde rum under 1960-talet, då de juridiska fördämningarna bröts ner och pornografin för första gången accepterades inom den offentliga bokcirkulationen. I Sverige startades under åren efter 1965 en hel uppsättning småförlag som ägnade sig åt att ge ut nyskriven och nyöversatt erotisk litteratur" (Carl-Michael Edenborg).
