It is a historical testimony of to the gauchos' (skilled horsemen, often poor, at times unruly marauders of cattle ranches) contribution in Argentine's independence from Spain, and, a prime example of "gauchesque" verse (known as "payadas") penned in distinctive Argentinian rural vernacular.
