Condition: Sehr gut. Gebraucht, aber gut erhalten. - Imre Nagy (1896-1958) wurde in der Nacht zum 24. Oktober 1956 neuer Ministerpräsident Ungarns, zum zweitenmal nach 1953. Sein Name wurde binnen weniger Tage weltbekannt, als er, ohne es geplant zu haben, zur Zentralfigur des ungarischen Volksaufstands wurde. Die kurzen 13 Tage der Revolution wurden von sowjetischen Panzern beendet, Imre Nagy wurde nach Rumänien verschleppt, verhaftet und 1958 nach einem Schauprozess in Budapest gehängt. Er blieb als "Märtyrer der Revolution von 1956" in Ungarn, aber auch im Gedächtnis der westlichen Welt mehr als jeder andere die Symbolfigur des dramatischen Freiheitskampfes der Ungarn gegen die Sowjetherrschaft. Über das Leben von Imre Nagy ist außerhalb Ungarns dennoch fast nichts bekannt. Im Gedenkjahr der 50. Wiederkehr des Volksaufstands von 1956 erscheint deshalb jetzt die einfühlsame Biographie von Janos M. Rainer, einem der besten Kenner der Ungarischen Revolution. Er stützt sich auf umfassende Recherchen in ungarischen und in russischen Archiven, u. a. auf die umfangreichen Prozeßakten und auf die Selbstzeugnisse Nagys. Sein spannendes Buch schildert das Leben eines überzeugten Kommunisten, eines Parteisoldaten aus der Provinz, der 1930 in die UdSSR emigrierte und nach der Rückkehr aus Moskau 1945 Inhaber höchster Staats- und Parteiämter wurde, sich in dieser Zeit aber zum Gegner des Stalinismus und zum Verfechter eines "Neuen Kurses", einer "wirklich sozialistischen Gesellschaft" entwickelte und 1956 an die Spitze einer Revolution gegen das bestehende System trat. One might suppose that under the suppressive regimes based on leftist ideology and internationalism their right-wing opponents would have been defeated and ultimately removed. These essays, on the other hand, recount the itinerary of survival and revival of 'right-wing' thought and activities under communist dictatorship. Resistance and accommodation are explored in the various phases from the Stalinist era to the demise of the Soviet Bloc, with the continuity provided by tacit or concealed right-wing discourses receiving particular consideration. The Eastern European right, both in its conservative and fascist version, centered on nationalism, a legitimizing factor that increased with the downfall of the regimes, and the authors thus accord nationalism special attention.Two documentary sources for these essays that stand out are files of the security services and the exceptionally rich Oral History Archive compiled by The 1956 Institute in Budapest.
