The author (1864-1948) was Past President of the Institute of Journalists, Editor of The Daily Express for 30 years and author of the famous R.D.B.'s Diary. He recounts his early life in a maze of picturesque memories, commencing as far back as 1867, when buffalo roamed the prairies of the undeveloped West, cowboys were real beings and Red Indians were in evidence as friends. It is the story of a boy's ambitions intermingled with the growth of a mid-western town, whose pioneer settlers spoke to each other in Latin, Greek, French, German and English. *** A SCARCE TITLE *** D4C Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First. Ralph David Blumenfeld (pen-name R.D.B.,1864 - 1948) was an American-born journalist, writer and newspaper editor who is chiefly notable for having been in charge of the British newspaper Daily Express from 1902 to 1932. A close friend of several politicians, he was said…to have been one of the few people who induced Calvin Coolidge to talk, while leading a visit of journalists to the White House in 1927. This book contains stories of the author's early years in the old West, before he went on to becoming a journalist, first in the US and then in England. This uncommon volume is very good in red cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Slight fading and bumping at the spine ends. There appears to be some wrinkling of the cloth on the lower rear board, possibly from water contact, but not showing any damage internally. The unclipped DJ has small missing chips at spine ends and minor soiling and edge wear in general. There is a lengthy inscription by the author on the title page, dated December 1944. Blumenfeld suffered a stroke in 1936 and retired to his home in rural England until his death in 1948. Signed copies of his books are very scarce. Signed.
