Tschechischer Maler und Grafiker, namhafter Vertreter der Sozialen Kunst in Tschechien. 1913-21 Studium an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Prag, unter anderem bei Jan Preisler, Max ?vabinský und Vratislav Nechleba. 1921/22 mit einem Stipendium Studium an der École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. 1923-29 Rückkehr nach Prag. Tätig als Assistenzprofessor in der Spezialklasse von Max ?vabinský an der Kunstakademie. Prägte in den 1920er Jahren maßgeblich die tschechische soziale Kunstbewegung, die sich mit dem Leben der Arbeiterklasse und dem urbanen Alltag auseinandersetzte. Gründungsmitglied der Künstlergruppe Spolu (Gemeinsam) sowie aktives Mitglied der renommierten Vereinigung tschechischer Grafikkünstler Hollar. 1923-28 erster Redakteur für den Kunst-Almanach Hollar.
