Ramsay was a nineteenth-century Scottish businessman, unusual in the fact that he cared about people as much as money. When exploding population and repeated crop failures on the island of Islay forced people into poverty in the early 1860's, Ramsay began to encourage and assist them to emigrate to Canada. Many of them settled in the Barrie/Orillia Ontario area. In 1870, he came to check on them. An account of his trip is included in the book. Ramsay's granddaughter-in-law wrote the biography of Ramsay. John's oldest brother, Thomas Ramsay, was building ships in Miramichi, New Brunswick in the late 1820's. 163 pp. with Index.
