The very personal story of the foundation of Leith School of Art, in the biographies of Mark Cheverton (1952-1991) and his wife, Charlotte (née Ramsden, 1960-1991). Mark Cheverton, head of art at the Edinburgh Academy, 1982-88, and Lottie, the former pupil whom he married, set up a new school of art in 1988 in what was once the Scandinavian Lutheran church in Leith, home of the Norwegian Seamen's Mission. Three years later they both died in a car crash, but their own mission continues in the school they founded. George Ramsden's book, generously illustrated with photographs, drawings, prints and paintings, is more than a document of artistic Edinburgh in the 1980s; it is an account of two unusual individuals who collaborated to inspire. "They were the most beautiful, good and kind people that I ever met," testifies one of their alumnae. "I thought I had gone to Leith to learn to draw but instead they opened doors into something far greater, and introduced me to what love really means.".
