First Edition. 1st printing of the first Canadian hardcover edition SIGNED by artist Carl Schaefer [1903-1995] in blue ballpoint pen on the half-title page with the words "Best wishes." No inscription. A square and tight copy with sharp corners and spine ends. Minor tanning to the page edges. The front free endpaper shows the outline of a paper clip along the top edge, the ghost of a pencil erasure and a short crease at the fore-edge from handling. The jacket is bright, crisp and not priced, as issued. Tanning to the white flaps. Increase the appeal of your Schaefer painting at auction by adding a signed copy of a study of his life and work. Schaefer's autograph is not commonly found. He was a student of Group of 7 members Arthur Lismer and J.E.H. MacDonald and served as a war artist for the RCAF during WWII. He was art director at "Esquire" and "Apparel Arts" magazines, and he designed the ground-breaking covers for the cultural journal "Direction". He worked at the Weintraub Advertising Agency from 1941-1954 and, in 1955, established his own design studio, acting as consultant to companies such as IBM, Westinghouse and UPS. His logos for these companies are world-renowned design classics.
