Added below in pencil [1885] "probably 1st Fools nonsense composed in an attempt to confound Mackhi, the actor, who boasted he could memorise anything after memorise anything ater having seen it only once" titlepage with some foxing very light foxing to a few pages before pages 16 when there is further foxing all of which is generally light except for page 24 where the foxing is heaviest but not detracting from the illustration. The inside and rear cover are blank but foxed & with damp tide marks similar, but wider than those of the front cover but hardly touching the books listed on the outside cover. This was the last book that Caldecott issued as he died in 1885. 1 volume. Softcover.

Frontispiece with tissue guard. Printed by R & R. Clark, Edinburgh. CONDITION: Very Good. Hinges are partly cracked. Corners are gently rubbed, and there is a small closed tear in cloth at head of spine. Interior is clean, lightly age-toned with no obvious foxing. A pictorial bookplate of a former owner is upon the front endpaper. Small bookbinder's label on rear endpaper: "Bound by Burn and Co., London." **American AUTHOR (1783-1859) Washington Irving's "Bracebridge Hall" was a series of comic sketches written while the author was visiting Birmingham, England and originally published as "The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon" in 1822.* ILLUSTRATOR Randolf Caldecott (1846-1886) is acknowledged in the Preface as the "same able pencil" to have illustrated MacMillan's re-publication of Irving's "Old Christmas" the year prior.
