Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
Charming little booklet of hymn texts likely written by a Sunday School teacher (or perhaps a student?), who has signed and titled the booklet: "Nancy Ransom. Hymns for Sabbath School. Benson Sept 1832." The 10 hymns are numbered and labeled long or common meter, the first 6 in numerical order, followed by 9 and 10, and finally 7 and 8, with a date of Sept 21, 1832.Many of the hymns are well known, and a few contemporary with the time (and likely place), such as "Hymn 1st L.M.Prayer for the children of the church,"which was written by Abby Hyde (1799-1872) of Connecticut, ca. 1824. "Hymn 3. C.M.At the opening of the School" is perhaps original, beginning: "Our sabbath school is opened now and we arise to sing Lord, raise our heartso to show us how Thy sweetest praise to sing." A fine and uncommon piece of Americana from a time when community singing was a greater part of daily life. 10x9cm, [8]ff, recto verso in neat, ink manuscript. Leaves stitched in dark oil-cloth covers. Some chipping and wear to covers, bit of interior foxing else very good.
