Stunningly bound in contemporary tree calf gilt by Patrick Wilson of Arbroath; speckled page edges; brown endpapers; half-titles; printed footnotes; tail-piece; alphabetical table and list of subscribers to rear. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure, the hinges and joints intact. Covers very well-preserved with just a hint of rubbing to the points. Interior very lightly toned with two small fore edge tears. Previous owner name inked to front endpaper. A most handsome copy. Notes: An important two-volume work, primarily published in Arbroath in 1805-1806, that provides a detailed narration of Scottish history from its origins to 1585. Based on Raphael Holinshed's earlier chronicles, this edition includes extensive descriptions of Scottish geography, customs, and manners. This particular copy is presented in a stunning contemporary tree calf binding by the provincial bookseller and binder Patrick Wilson.
