The author provides a detailed account of the clothing worn by the people of Ancient Rome, along with related customs and trends. The book also explores the evolution of fashion in Rome, from simple garments adopted by the early peoples to the more complex outfits worn by the later elites, including materials such as silk and the use of jewelry and makeup. Through its examination of the clothing of Roman emperors, soldiers, and women, this book not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of the Romans, but also offers insights into the socio-economic and political forces that shaped their culture, "fashion" as an artistic expression of religious, social, and political messages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. 2 large heavy folio (ca 12" x 18") portfolios bound in green cloth covered boards, portfolios in fair to poor condition with heavy wear- covers detached on Part II. Contents are sepia toned plates 1-167 in part I and 168- 281 in part II. 281 plates present. The printed number on the plates seem to have little relation to the numbers given on the list of plates and someone has put pencil numbers on the plates- we presume, and have not verified that the pencil numbers correspond exactly to the list of plates. One plate has some color, others do not. The plates are age darkened and soiled to varying degrees from light to heavy. Some plate edges a bit frayed. There are light dampstains on the edges of a few pages not affecting images but last plate in Part I image is affected. Overall, a scarce collection uncolored plates good for reference. Note: due to size and weight shipping outside the USA will cost more than an average book.
