Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This set of lecture notes provides a detailed and up-to-date description of a field undergoing explosive growth, that of confined photon systems in the shape of microcavities or photonic crystals. Bringing together world leaders in the field, it provides all the basic tools needed to master a subject which will have both major impact in fundamental studies and widescale applications. Confined photon systems enable the study of low-dimensional photonic systems, modified light-matter interaction, e.g. between excitons and photons in all-solid-state semiconductor microcavities, and of many phenomena of quantum optics, including single photon generation, squeezed light, quantum state entanglement, non-local quantum measurements, and, potentially, quantum computation. They are also on the verge of yielding new, high performance optical devices for large-scale industries such as telecommunications and display technology.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The control of optical modes in microcavities or in photonic bandgap (PBG) materials is coming of age! Although these ideas could have been developed some time ago, it is only recently that they have emerged, due to advances in both atomic physics and in fabrication techniques, be it on the high-quality dielectric mirrors required for high-finesse Fabry Perot resonators or in semiconductor multilayer deposition methods. Initially the principles of quantum electro-dynamics (QED) were demonstrated in elegant atomic physics experiments. Now solid-state implementations are being investigated, with several subtle differences from the atomic case such as those due to their continuum of electronic states or the near Boson nature of their elementary excitations, the exciton. Research into quantum optics brings us ever newer concepts with potential to improve system performance such as photon squeezing, quantum cryptography, reversible taps, photonic de Broglie waves and quantum computers. The possibility of implementing these ideas with solid-state systems gives us hope that some could indeed find their way to the market, demonstrating the continuing importance of basic research for applications, be it in a somewhat more focused way than in earlier times for funding.

  • [Wanted Poster]POLICE DEPARTMENT Office of Marshal BALTIMORE, MD., October 9th, 1906. WANTED FOR FALSE PRETENSES. [Mugshot Images: ID 1949] JAMES HARTRAY LANGDON. WE HOLD WARRANT AND INDICTMENT for the arrest of JAMES HARTRAY LANGDON on the charge of obtaining a Gold Open Watch and Chain, valued at $215.00, by means of False Pretenses (Bogus Check), from John W. Mealy, Sons and Co., of this city, on October 1st, 1906. Description of Watch: Gold Open Face, size No. 12, 18 karat, minute repeater, gold hands, made by Tuchon [Touchon] & Co., Geneva, No. 7909; also Gold Rope Chain.

The watch Langdon stole was a luxury timepiece of exceptional rarity and value. The poster spells it "Tuchon," but it was a Touchon & Co. watch, a Swiss watch manufactured in Geneva. Touchon was renowned for producing exceptionally high-grade, ultra-thin mechanical movements. Their movements were so masterfully constructed that elite luxury houses like Tiffany & Co. and Black, Starr & Frost regularly purchased Touchon timepieces to retail under their own prestigious store names. The most notable detail on the flyer is that this was a minute repeater. A minute repeater is a masterpiece of mechanical engineering. By sliding a small lever on the side of the case, the pocket watch physically chimes the exact time using tiny internal hammers. .

    Language: English

Published by without needing to light a match. Minute repeaters were difficult to assemble by hand. The watch case was forged from solid 18k yellow gold. An "Open Face" style meant it lacked a protective front metal cover, allowing the wearer to see the time instantly through the crystal face without opening a lid. In standard watchmaking scales, a Size 12 pocket watch measures approximately 1.55 inches (c. 40mm) in diameter. This was considered a sleek, elegant, and comfortably slim "gentleman's pocket size," contrasting with the larger, heavier pocket watches carried by railroad conductors. The Serial Number (No. 7909) was the unique identifier stamped onto the inner gold case and movement by Touchon & Co. to prevent counterfeiters and help jewelers, authenticate it. Langdon didn't just take the watch; he took a heavy, matching solid-gold decorative rope chain used to anchor the timepiece safely to a vest pocket. The flyer notes the store value was $215.00 in 1906. Adjusted for inflation, that equals roughly $7,500 today.

[Transcription:] "POLICE DEPARTMENT Office of Marshal BALTIMORE, MD., October 9th, 1906. 12, 18 karat, minute repeater, gold hands, made by Tuchon & Co., Geneva, No. 7909; also Gold Rope Chain. Description of Langdon: Age about 29 years, height 5 ft. 5 in., weight about 115 lbs., slender build, smooth face, dark chestnut hair, medium fair complexion, violet blue eyes; when last seen was dressed in light grey or light large plaid suit; wears handkerchief in coat pocket, puff tie with scarf pin in it. Kindly have thorough search made at all Pawn-brokers and Dealers for the above described Watch, and if located advise me at once; also keep sharp lookout for Langdon, and if located arrest and wire me, and an officer will be sent with papers for him. Very respectfully, TH[OMAS] F. FARNAN, Marshal of Police. On October 1, 1906, Langdon entered John W. Mealy, Sons & Co. jewelers in Baltimore and purchased a high-end luxury watch and chain valued at $215 (equivalent to roughly $7,500 today). He paid with a bad check drawn from the Corn Exchange Bank of New York, where he held no account. The police department distributed this circular on October 9, and Langdon was quickly apprehended. On November 15, 1906, there was a formal arraignment before Judge Harlan. During the process of entering a plea, Langdon was permitted to address the court. Langdon used this opportunity to make a statement in mitigation. He didn't deny taking the watch or passing the check, but he attempted to convince the judge that his intent wasn't criminal. He claimed he acted in "good faith" and fully intended to deposit funds into the New York bank to cover it (an excuse he used in other cases). His excuse was a legal impossibility because the prosecution proved he did not even hold an account at that bank to deposit money into. Once Langdon realized his "good faith" story was dismantled, he pled guilty. To try to garner leniency, he falsely claimed he was 24 years old when in fact he was c. 29. Judge Harlan accepted the guilty plea and based on Langdon's dishonest statements and his history of deception, he sentenced him to 3 years of hard labor in the Maryland Penitentiary. Langdon's criminal career did not start or stop in Baltimore in 1906. He had been a traveling con artist along the East Coast and parts of the Midwest. His favorite tactic was traveling to small town banks, presenting himself as a respectable businessman, and passing forged certified checks. To build trust, he signed the bogus checks using the name of his actual father, Samuel P. Langdon, an apparently reputable figure from Philadelphia. In a major incident prior to Baltimore, a cashier named A.H. Beatty at the Saltsburg Bank in Pennsylvania hesitated over one of Langdon's large Philadelphia checks. Beatty looked up the bank directory, realized the forgery, and had a constable arrest Langdon on the spot. When police locked him up in Pennsylvania, it was learned that Langdon was already a wanted fugitive, with police warrants for identical check fraud schemes in Tyrone (PA), Latrobe (PA), and Youngstown (OH). The watch was probably stripped for its 18-karat gold value, sold under a completely different black-market identity, or sits unrecognized in a private family collection. During the Great Depression and various gold booms of the 20th century, thousands of vintage pocket watches were stripped of their gold. . . and gongs. It rings separate tones for the hours, quarter-hours, and individual minutes. In 1906, before illuminated dials, a minute repeater allowed a wealthy owner to audibly check the time in darkness (such as inside a theater or a horse-drawn carriage (illustrator).

Rare original salesman's cover dummy for Carolyn Wells' Seven Ages of Childhood illustrated by Jessie Willcox Smith and issued by Moffat, Yard and Company in 1909. Cover with cardboard backing and unique flap denoting that this is a real salesman's dummy. Interestingly, the cover, retaining the originally issued circular cover insert and gilt circular motif with gilt lettering, is cream, fine-ribbed cloth, a cover variant quite scarce for this book. Near fine. Exceedingly scarce.

516 pp. Englisch.

Forging our relationships into a working unit and discussing our futures? That's a molehill compared to my sociopathic ex-fiance who's on the run. He wants to turn my world into an archaic hellscape for Omegas. And make bank off of us. A war is brewing between the factions, spearheaded by the man I hate most--and he's coming for us all. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. TW: This 40,000+ novel is Book 2 in a non-M/M, non-shifting Omegaverse trilogy with a cliffhanger but with a guaranteed HEA. There are dark, adult themes that may be sensitive to some readers including scenes of violence, war, and an independent woman who won't take on any more bullshit. This item is printed on demand.
