Inscription by Harry Beeston to verso of front fly reads "This valuable note book chiefly relating to birds observed or obtained in West Sussex by Mr. W Jeffery of Ratham near Chichester, Sussex, was presented to me by Mr. George Jeffrey son of the above, in remembrance of many pleasant excursions together on + about the South Downs, so beloved by his father, on his leaving England to take up his residence in South Africa possibly permanently.
