François Rathery a pour père Roger Rathery, médecin à l'hôpital Tenon, qui décède prématurément. Il a pour beau-père G. Bouchardat, pour grand-père par alliance A. Bochardat et pour gendre Merklen. Il a deux fils, Jean et Michel. Durant sa carrière, il se lie avec Castaigne, Baudouin. Après avoir fait de brillantes années au collège, Francis Rathery débute ses étude de médecine. En 1899, il accomplit son service militaire. Puis, il débute son internat. En 1904, il obtient la médaille d'or. En 1909, il est nommé médecin des Hôpitaux ; en 1910, il est agrégé. Durant la Première guerre mondiale, il est médecin-chef à l'hôpital de Zuydcoote, puis il devient médecin consultant d'une des armées. Au retour de la guerre, il reprend ses fonctions d'agrégé et rejoint la Chaire de Thérapeutique, dont Carnot était titulaire. Il contribue à en réorganiser l'enseignement. En 1926, il est professeur de Pathologie expérimentale et comparée, et ce pour une durée de cinq ans. Puis, il succède à Vaquez dans la Chaire de Clinique thérapeutique à l'hôpital Cochin. Une fois encore, la guerre interrompt sa carrière et il y perd son fils aîné Jean en août 1940. En septembre 1939, il obtient, comme médecin colonnel, le rôle de médecin consultant de la 3ème armée. Il décède d'une maladie douloureuse, après avoir été opéré deux fois. Francis Rathery travaille sur les maladies des reins, du foie et de la nutrition, travaux basés sur de multiples recherches anatomo-pathologiques et expérimentales. En ce qui concerne la nutrition, il s'intéresse au métabolisme des glucides, à l'insuline et au diabète. Francis Rathery est élu membre de l'Académie de médecine pour section de médecine le 6 décembre 1932. Il est successivement secrétaire général, vice-président et président de l'Association des Médecins de la Seine.
