First Edition
Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good+. Virgil Finlay, Frank R. Paul, Lawrence, Norman Saunders, Rafael DeSoto, Bud Parke (front covers) (illustrator). First Edition. ----------This heavy set will require NO additional shipping charges for standard shipping for a US or Canadian order. An order from outside the US or Canada cannot be accepted due to the impossibility of satisfying the necessary export requirements and documentation. 81 pulp magazines, standard pulp size (4 1951 issues were a somewhat smaller 8 by 6 inch size). Many 1948-1952 issues are Canadian printings which have the same contents, covers and dates as their US counterparts, but are a little taller, and differ in the copyright information and back cover advertisements (Canadian breweries). The COMPLETE 81-issue run of this fantasy / science fiction / horror pulp magazine, September-October 1939 through June 1953. The first few issues contained mostly shorter fantasy works, reprinted from the Munsey chain of pulp magazines. Within a few months, each issue contained a complete fantasy novel either from the old pulp magazines or from out-of-print hardcover books. Many issues contained shorter works in addition to the novels, some being original works, others being reprints. The first 5 issues had text-only covers, but from then on featured marvellous covers from Virgil Finlay, Frank R. Paul, Lawrence and others. The condition of the magazines ranges from good to almost as new, with many of the earlier issues (1939-1944) being especially nice and likely unread. The December 1948 issue has had the detached cover re-attached. Some, but by no means all, of the writers included are: A. Merritt, Ray Cummings, Austin Hall, Homer Eon Flint, Ralph Milne Farley, J. George Frederick, Philip M. Fisher, Douglas Newton, George Allan England, Will McMorrow, Francis Stevens, J.U. Giesy, H.P. Lovecraft, John Hawkins, John Taine, Robert W. Chambers, J. 10 1/4" x 11 3/4", 35 leaves/70 pages 3-ring binder. Ray Rand took a lot of pride in his theatrical work. From the time he was in high school and into his twenties, he kept this scrapbook to commemorate his work. He was a costume designer, dancer, and actor. This scrapbook catalogues his time with the Keweenaw Musical Playhouse, a "professional summer musical theatre" in Keweenaw, Michigan, and beyond, at the Mountaindale Playhouse, and various other playhouses. Raymond Rand was a member of the Iron Fokin Ballet Company. Several pamphlets say as much, and there are several photos of Rand practicing ballet. At the Keweenaw Musical Playhouse Raymond Rand was the costume designer for productions of "Guys and Dolls", "South Pacific", "Oklahoma", "The Pajama Game", "The Desert Song", "Brigadoon", "The Boy Friend" (in which he also appeared), and "The Bells are Ringing". With the Mountaindale Playhouse he played Marvin in "Wish You Were Here". Under the direction of Leland Ball he was cast as Freddie in "Bye Bye Birdie" and as a member of the ensemble in "Annie Get Your Gun", as well as in "Carnival". Later, he was cast as Aladdin in the eponymous play for a performance which brought plays to school children in NY. It seems he worked on several youth performances, as well as with the Philharmonic. Throughout, there are sketches and renderings presumably made by Raymond himself. Also within, are portraits and photographs of the casts and set. There are 30 photographs throughout. Several newspaper clippings from local newspapers give praise to the dedication and detail Rand gave to the costumes he made. A wonderful collection of theater memorabilia.
