Soft cover. Condition: New. 8vo (23.5 cm), XVII, 208 pp. Laminated wrappers. Synopsis: This book discusses an efficient random linear network coding scheme, called BATched Sparse code, or BATS code, which is proposed for communication through multi-hop networks with packet loss. Multi-hop wireless networks have applications in the Internet of Things (IoT), space, and under-water network communications, where the packet loss rate per network link is high, and feedbacks have long delays and are unreliable. Traditional schemes like retransmission and fountain codes are not sufficient to resolve the packet loss so that the existing communication solutions for multi-hop wireless networks have either long delay or low throughput when the network length is longer than a few hops. These issues can be resolved by employing network coding in the network, but the high computational and storage costs of such schemes prohibit their implementation in many devices, in particular, IoT devices that typically have low computational power and very limited storage. A BATS code consists of an outer code and an inner code. As a matrix generalization of a fountain code, the outer code generates a potentially unlimited number of batches, each of which consists of a certain number (called the batch size) of coded packets. The inner code comprises (random) linear network coding at the intermediate network nodes, which is applied on packets belonging to the same batch. When the batch size is 1, the outer code reduces to an LT code (or Raptor code if precode is applied), and network coding of the batches reduces to packet forwarding. BATS codes preserve the salient features of fountain codes, in particular, their rateless property and low encoding/decoding complexity. BATS codes also achieve the throughput gain of random linear network coding. This book focuses on the fundamental features and performance analysis of BATS codes, and includes some guidelines and examples on how to design a network protocol using BATS codes.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the three international workshops PAISI 2008, PACCF 2008, and SOCO 2008, held as satellite events of the IEEE International Conference on Intelligence and Security Informatics, ISI 2008, in Taipei, Taiwan, in June 2008.The 55 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from the presentations at the workshops. The 21 papers of the Pacific Asia Workshop on Intelligence and Security Informatics (PAISI 2008) cover topics such as information retrieval and event detection, internet security and cybercrime, currency and data protection, cryptography, image and video analysis, privacy issues, social networks, modeling and visualization, and network intrusion detection. The Pacific Asia Workshop on Cybercrime and Computer Forensics (PACCF 2008) furnishes 10 papers about forensic information management, forensic technologies, and forensic principles and tools. The 24 papers of the Workshop on Social Computing (SOCO 2008) are organized in topical sections on social web and social information management, social networks and agent-based modeling, as well as social opinions, e-commerce, security and privacy considerations. Light mark to cover, otherwise like new. As any human activity needs goals, mathematical research needs problems -David Hilbert Mechanics is the paradise of mathematical sciences -Leonardo da Vinci Mechanics and mathematics have been complementary partners since Newton's time and the history of science shows much evidence of the beneficial influence of these disciplines on each other. Driven by increasingly elaborate modern technological applications the symbiotic relationship between mathematics and mechanics is continually growing. However, the increasingly large number of specialist journals has generated a duality gap between the two partners, and this gap is growing wider. Advances in Mechanics and Mathematics (AMMA) is intended to bridge the gap by providing multi-disciplinary publications which fall into the two following complementary categories: 1. An annual book dedicated to the latest developments in mechanics and mathematics; 2. Monographs, advanced textbooks, handbooks, edited volumes and selected conference proceedings. The AMMA annual book publishes invited and contributed comprehensive reviews, research and survey articles within the broad area of modern mechanics and applied mathematics. Mechanics is understood here in the most general sense of the word, and is taken to embrace relevant physical and biological phenomena involving electromagnetic, thermal and quantum effects and biomechanics, as well as general dynamical systems. Especially encouraged are articles on mathematical and computational models and methods based on mechanics and their interactions with other fields. All contributions will be reviewed so as to guarantee the highest possible scientific standards. (42/4).
