On 28 June 2012 this was corrected with the dedication and unveiling of the Bomber Command Memorial in The Green Park, London. The journey from the initial idea to the unveiling of the memorial was a long and complex one and 'The Bomber Command Memorial - We Will Remember Them' tells the story of the campaign; locating a site, obtaining permission, raising the funds, designing the memorial, and the opening ceremony. The book also tells the remarkable story of Bomber Command from the viewpoint of those who took part, and veterans reflect on the experiences they had and what the memorial means to them. 50% of all receipts go to the Bomber Command Memorial Fund registered charity. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with full number line. DOUBLE SIGNED BY BOTH AUTHORS, WITHOUT DEDICATION, IN BLACK PEN, ON TITLE PAGE. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly bruised, some slight creases to back jacket, not price clipped (£16.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 359pp. The Daily Telegraph's expose of MPs' expenses, which dominated the news agenda for more than six weeks, made history by leading to the resignation of the Speaker and several Cabinet ministers, as well as taking Gordon Brown to the very brink of losing his grip on power. It is a story which began in the unlikely setting of a Chilean vineyard, when Robert Winnett, the paper's deputy political editor, first learnt from Gordon Brown's controversial aide Damian McBride, that a disk containing details of every MP's expense claims may have been obtained by a whistleblower. Winnett was destined to become the reporter who would secure the disc and its contents for his newspaper, landing what has been described by some commentators as 'the political scoop of the century'. Together with Gordon Rayner, Winnett ran a team of reporters who pored through more than a million expenses documents. Astonishing details began to emerge: Gordon Brown's peculiar cleaning arrangements, Oliver Letwin's tennis court, Sir Peter Viggers' duck house, Douglas Hogg's £2200 bill for cleaning his moat, house flipping and tax dodging, and the suggestion of deliberate fraud. 'No Expenses Spared' is the riveting inside story of the biggest political scandal to hit Parliament for a generation, with reverberations that continue today. Scarce signed. Cartoons by Matt (Pritchett) (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).…

SYNOPSIS: Mostly in Clover, Harry Boyle's first book, is a lively series of reminiscences of his childhood spent on a farm in Huron County, Ontario. With a winning blend of nostalgia and amusement, he writes of the people and events, the trials, triumphs, tears and laughter which stand out most boldly in his recollections of his boyhood. Yet for all its charm, his account is essentially realistic. Mr. Boyle has skilfully refrained from applying to the past a coating of sugary sentimentalism. Dozens of people stroll in and out of the author's recollections, leaving vivid impressions of their personalities. He lovingly recalls his family: his grandparents, who occasionally provided a haven from a storm of parental wrath; his warm-hearted but taciturn father, and his mother, the family financier, whose skilful management of her teapot bank kept the family solvent in moments of financial stress. Affectionately, the author observes in retrospect the quirks and foibles of the aunts, uncles and cousins who were part of his childhood world. He remembers the long succession of hired men who worked for his father. The author recalls the yard whose fences for a time constituted the boundaries of his world, and the animal inhabitants of the world. He describes the festive events which marked his family's calendar, the annual baking of the Christmas cake, or their one-day holiday at the lake. The descriptions of country cooking that occur regularly throughout the book are calculated to make the reader throw away his diet sheet and run for the nearest strawberry shortcake. The most outstanding quality of the book is the sensitivity with which Mr. Boyle writes of the difficult years that lie between boyhood and manhood. He describes with unusual insight the incidents which for him were milestones on the path that led out of the complexities of adolescence to the more stable world of adulthood. Equally sensitive are his descriptions of the rural world in which he grew up. His long-standing familiarity with the outdoors has bred in him an articulate appreciation of the many-faced beauty of the fields and woods. Everyone who longs to escape for a few hours from the present-day world to one more leisurely and simple, will find Mostly in Clover the ideal vehicle. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Gordon Rayner (illustrator). Ex-Library.…
