L'une d'entre elles, qui a posé… les bases d'un nouvel équilibre géostratégique dans cette région clé du monde, méritait bien un livre. Plutôt que de parler de guerre du Kippour, nom sous lequel elle est plus connue en Occident, j'ai choisi une formule neutre qui m'évite de prendre parti pour l'un ou l'autre des camps. Mon ouvrage se veut en effet impartial. De Paris à Washington, du Caire à Tel-Aviv en passant par les champs de bataille du Sinaï et du Golan, j'ai effectué un véritable travail de limier pour reconstituer le puzzle des événements. Je me suis efforcé d'en rendre la lecture agréable et captivante. Adoptant une approche résolument pluridisciplinaire, j'ai voulu que ce livre soit une mine d'informations. C'est la raison pour laquelle j'ai multiplié les cartes et les diagrammes de toutes sortes. Le recoupement des données fut un exercice à côté duquel un casse-tête chinois constitue un agréable divertissement cérébral. Plus que tout, j'ai vécu cette recherche comme une formidable aventure humaine qui m'a permis d'interviewer de nombreux acteurs qui ont marqué l'histoire récente de cette région fascinante. J'en ai rencontré certains qui m'ont fait toucher du doigt la différence entre les individus qui font l'histoire, et ceux qui tentent de la raconter. Je pense à cet égard que le rôle de l'historien consiste à éclairer le passé, pour comprendre le présent en vue de préparer l'avenir. Mon ouvrage s'inscrit dans cette logique, à l'heure où le conflit israélo-arabe, à la croisée des chemins, occupe toujours le devant de la scène internationale. Le Proche-Orient pourra en effet aussi bien être la terre du conflit sans fin, que l'un des laboratoires de l'apprentissage de la paix entre des peuples qui s'étaient jusque là perçus comme irrémédiablement ennemis.
