Trotty, a "ticket-porter" (that is, a casual messenger), finds himself on the very church steps where he plies his trade. Filled with gloom at newspaper reports of crime & immorality, he wonders whether working classes like himself are not simply born bad, short notions of self-improvement, have no right to live.
