Originals wraps bound in for first volume. 80 p. + 80 p. (160 total). 26 cm. Wright I, 2719. Catherine Read (ne Arnold) Williams was a remarkable woman from Rhode Island. Born in 1787, she married a descendant of Roger Williams. She left her husband with her infant daughter and supported herself through writing (quite unusual for the early 19th century). Following the Dorr Rebellion of 1842, she wrote this book as a scathing attack on the anti-suffrage, established families of Rhode Island. She also worked as president of the Providence Ladies Dorric Circle (an organization establish to promote suffrage in the state.) Catherine was personal friend and confidante with Thomas Dorr.
