This book on the historical geography of the United States of America contains numerous exquisite illustrations, following the original Chinese publication (1838 in Singapore) by the American Protestant Christian Missionary Elijah Coleman BRIDGMAN (1801-1861). The first part is a cultural and historical overview; the second volume focuses on big cities. The book is accompanied with coloured maps: of the US, of the individual States, of New York and of the world. The editor, Genpo MITSUKURI (1799-1863), was a samurai, doctor and rangaku scholar who participated in diplomatic relations between Japan, Russian Empire and the US as a translator.
