Purple flexible cloth gilt. Lacking the frontispiece folding map (a facsimile of the map is supplied, nicely reproduced, folded, and laid into the book). Neat contemporary pencil owner name on front flyleaf (above the author's inscription), and early rubberstamped owner name and neat ink inscription on front pastedown, stating: "Mr. Geo. W. Allen. Chesaning, Michigan. Saginaw County." A bit faded and rubbed on spine, front flyleaf is detached, with small chips and early tape mends along edges of front flyleaf and front pastedown with browning, a good only copy. Inscribed by the author, in year of publication in pencil, on the front flyleaf: "Compliments from the Author, August 1871." Journalist Laura Ream was born in Lebanon, Ohio; was a newspaper correspondent for the *Cincinnati Commercial Tribune*. An uncommon title in the trade.
