Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. As new condition gray boards with a dark gray spine and black spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; John McEnroe's Top Ten Recommendations for Improving Tennis in the 21st Century; My Top 25 Rock & Roll Moments: A Pesonal Outtake Reel and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates. "On the court, no one was more intense. On the air, no one is more scathingly honest. You can imagine what his autobiography is like. "I'd like to think there's something magical about the McEnroe name in tennis, that I electrified the sport, or brought it up to another level. Some of that is because of my commentary work -- people see another personality to me -- but it's also because of the ferociousness that I displayed on the court. People ask me, "Do you feel your behavior was abominable?" I don't think about that. There's no point. Why think about that? But it doesn't mean that it never comes up in my mind. I can practically hear you saying, "Come on, McEnroe! You're rich, famous, and healthy. You have a loving family, a more than comfortable life. Why not just relax and enjoy what you have?" Here's what I say back to you: I'm working on it, hard. But at the same time -- I'm a serve-and-volley player. My style is, as it's always been, to move forward, always forward. My standards for myself are, as they've always been, extraordinarily high. Why should I change now?" John McEnroe was just an eighteen-year-old amateur from Queens when he stunned the tennis world by making it th the Wimbledon semifinals in 1977. He turned pro the next year; three years later, he was ranked number one in the world. McEnroe dominated tennis in the eighties, winning three Wimbledon and four U.S. Open titles, and helping the United States win five Davis Cups. His 1980 Wimbledon finals match with Bjorn Borg is still considered one of the greatest matches ever. But there were demons to fight, and now McEnroe takes them all on. You Cannot Be Serious is McEnroe at his most personal, a no-holds-barred examination of Johnny Mac, the kid from Queens, and his "wild ride" through the world of professional tennis at a boom time when players were treated like rock stars. Here he candidly explores the roots of his famous on-court explosions, his ambivalence toward the sport that made him famous ("The truth is I didn't really want to pursue it, until it just pursued me:); his adventures and misadventures on the road; his up-close views of colleagues such as "Broadway" Vitas Gerulaitis, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg ("He was magical -- like some kind of Viking god who'd landed on the tennis court"), Ivan Lendl, Arthur Ashe, Ilie Nastase, and others; his opinions of contemporary tennis; and his current roles as devoted husband and father, senior tour player, and often controversial commentator. Funny, biting, close to the bone, this is exactly the book you'd expect -- and want -- from one of the most colorful figures of our time." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Dewey, Amanda (book design); Amoroso, Lisa (jacket design); Sumner, Bill (front jacket photograh); Estrada, Sigrid (rear jacket photograph) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. The format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11.5 inches. [9], 582 pages. Illustrations. Appendix [includes Bibliography, Roll of Honor, Index, and Addendum] Inscribed by the author on the fep. The dust jacket has some wear, soiling and small edge tears and chips. The inscription read For Lynn Wenrick Best Wishes Carroll Steward "CAL". Stewart (1918-2007) -was a military man who made a career as a reporter and journalist. He was the founder of the Sun newspaper in Lincoln, NE, in 1961. He also wrote a monograph on friend Ben Kuroki that was used as the basis for an ETV documentary. Stewart served with Kuroki in World War II. Stewart's book Ploesti: The Great Ground-Air Battle of August has been called the definitive history of one of the greatest aviation battles in history; the book has been translated into at least 4 languages. The Japanese-American Kuroki was a gunner on 58 bomber missions in World War II, then used his notoriety to speak out against racial bigotry. Stewart served in the same bomb group as Kuroki, and in 2005, he worked with others to see Kuroki receive the Distinguished Service Medal, the military's third highest decoration. Stewart's monograph on Kuroki helped others understand his many achievements and struggles against racism. During World War II, the 93rd Bombardment Group was the first VIII Bomber Command Consolidated B-24 Liberator group to bomb targets in Occupied Europe and Nazi Germany. It flew from RAF Alconbury in Cambridgeshire. The group became operational with a mission over Occupied France on 9 October 1942. He was trained as a radio operator. He worked for an English printing press owner, who allowed him to produce a tabloid weekly called The Liberator, the first service publication in the European Theater. The military, which had not authorized the publication, shut it down on the grounds that newsprint needed to be rationed. Shortly thereafter, the military came out with a London edition of Stars and Stripes. Stewart got noticed by Col. Ted Timberlake, commander of the 93rd Bomb Group. Timberlake, upon being promoted to general, made the young Nebraskan his staff aide. Stewart worked alongside Col. Jimmy Stewart, the actor and knew war correspondents Walter Cronkite and Andy Rooney. After Stewart published "Ted's Travelling Circus," he got a letter from Rooney. "He said 'It was the best unit history that I've ever read,'" Scott Stewart said. The 93rd Bombardment Group would become the pioneer B-24 Liberator unit in the Eighth Air Force and history's most traveled, most colorful and, arguably, most efficient fighting machine. By Summer 1942, the 93rd had 'killed' at least one German U-boat in the Caribbean. The 93rd made war from England against staggering Luftwaffe fighter and anti-aircraft defenses. Reference to the 93rd was censored; expedience dictated a nickname -- Ted's Travelling Circus . A half-century later, the 93rd's untold story of uncommon valor, improvisation and raw talent in action comes this gripping saga, stitched mostly from combatant testimony . This is an account compellingly woven into chronological context of the greatest conflict of all time"--Dust jacket. The 93rd Bombardment Group was activated on 1 March 1942. It was engaged in antisubmarine operations over the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea as part of the III Bomber Command, May July 1942. The group moved to England and was assigned to Eighth Air Force. The group flew its B-24 Liberator aircraft with a tail code of "Circle B". The 93rd was the first Liberator-equipped bomber group to reach the Eighth Air Force. The group on 9 October 1942 attacked steel and engineering works at Lille France. On 6 December 1942 most of the group was transferred to Twelfth Air Force in North Africa to support the Operation Torch landings. The group receiving a Distinguished Unit Citation for operations in that theater. The detachment personnel were featured on the cover of the 26 July 1943 issue of Life Magazine and the unit dubbed "Ted's Traveling Circus" after its first commander, Col. Edward J. Timberlake. The group bombed engine repair works, harbors, power plants, and other targets in France, the Low Countries, and Germany. A detachment returned to the Mediterranean theater during June and July 1943 to support the Allied invasion of Sicily and to participate in the famous low-level attack on enemy oil installations at Ploesti on 1 August. The 93rd carried out its bombing of the vital oil installations despite heavy losses inflicted by attacks from the fully alerted enemy and was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for the operation. The group went back to the Mediterranean to support the invasion of Italy in September 1943. The 93rd concentrated on bombardment of strategic targets such as marshaling yards, aircraft factories, oil refineries, chemical plants, and cities in Germany. It bombed gun emplacements, choke points, and bridges near Cherbourg-en-Cotentin during the Normandy invasion in June 1944. It attacked troop concentrations during the Saint-Lô breakthrough in July 1944; transported food, gasoline, water, and other supplies to the Allies advancing across France, August September 1944; dropped supplies to troops in the Netherlands; struck enemy transportation and other targets during the Battle of the Bulge; and flew missions during the airborne assault across the Rhine, dropping supplies to troops near Wesel and bombing a night-fighter base at Stormede. The 93rd Bombardment Group ceased combat operations in April 1945. The group was inactivated in December 1945. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Bill Schlaebitz (Jacket rear watercolor) (illustrator).
