Ex-private library, a lending service that didn't catch on; highlighting and pen markings to about 1/3 of the book, including Genesis through chapter 22; D…J tips worn, spine label removed, now wrapped in mylar. Exceedingly scarce in trade and difficult to locate in libraries as it is often undifferentiated from the revised second edition in listings. The Rev. G. Henton Davies was a British Baptist scholar tasked with composing a commentary on the book of Genesis for the Southern Baptist Convention Sunday School Board's new 12-volume commentary series. Davies's interpretive approach incorporated numerous elements which would raise the ire of a growing SBC contingent advocating a literal interpretation of all portions of Scripture. Most horrifying was his *sachkritik* analysis of Noah's Flood and the Sacrifice of Isaac. In the latter, Davies insisted the goad to kill the promised Issac was not a divine command but a projection of Abraham's troubled psyche: 'Indeed what Christian or humane conscience could regard such a command as coming from God?' Through great controversy, this first volume would be cancelled, recalled, pulped, and rewritten by a new author. The fracas over Davies's commentary marks the first great flexing of the ascendent Fundamentalist faction's power that would culminate in the 'SBC Takeover' of the denomination in the 80's.
