7" x 10.25" photo album with 50 leaves/49 pages and 138 photos, including several panoramic shots. The album dates from 1900-1903. Written inside the front cover is the compiler of the album, Redick Henry McKee (1864-1949), and "Please do not touch fingers to surface of photographs." According to his obituary, McKee, was born on a plantation near Alexandria, La. His parents died when he was a child and he spent his schooldays in the Washington, D. C. home of his uncle, David R. McKee, one-time president of the Associated Press. He was a Civil Engineer who in 1892 established the Seattle office of the survey. The following year he produced "McKee's Correct Road Map of Seattle and Vicinity," the city's first topographical map. He also prepared many of the survey's sectional maps of this region. As a young man, Mr. McKee entered the United States Geological Survey and spent much time in the Sierra Nevada and other parts of California. The album begins in Washington, DC, with several panoramas, including one captioned "Looking east from Geological Survey office window." I imagine that since he was a surveyor, this is where he was working at the time. He then embarks on a railroad trip, with spots along the way including railway stations such as: North Platte, Nebraska Paxton, Nebraska, Logansport, Indiana Truckee, California New Ogden, Utah, Auburn, California Depot Hotel at Redding Sacramento Other photos show McKee and others with surveying equipment, Shasta County, California, Billy Button (Indian Stage driver), Pitt River Ferry, the 49ers, Keswick (Copper Smelting town), entrance to Gold Mine, Squaw Creek, President McKinley's inauguration of 1901, West Point Cadets, oil drills in Los Angeles, Mt. Vernon, Lafayette Square, US Naval Academy grounds, Annapolis, Maryland, Salt Lake City, Alameda, California, Shasta Soda Springs, Lake Washington, Seattle harbor, Bellingham Bay, Salmon fishing and a cannery, Stinson Mill, Ringling Brother's Circus parade, Puget Sounds, battleships, etc. The photos vary in size from several panoramic photos measuring 2.25" x 7," with the smaller photos measuring about 2.5" x 3." Some of the photos are lightly faded, but the album is complete and in good overall condition.
