Contact seller5-star sellerOriginal black and white photograph of President Harry S. Truman, signed by him and presented to Robert Redmond, head gardener of the White House. The portrait shows Truman seated at his desk before the American flag, his hands folded over a book, and is signed in the lower margin, âSincerely yours, Harry Truman.â Robert Milton Redmond came to the White House grounds with the National Park Service as a sixteen-year-old summer worker in 1923 and stayed for some forty years, serving under six presidents. In later years he also looked after the Kennedy childrenâs ponies and Pushinka, the dog given to the Kennedys by Nikita Khrushchev, before retiring in 1963. Framed. In very good condition. A Missouri farmer, artillery captain in the First World War, and county judge before his election to the United States Senate in 1934, he became vice president in January 1945 and succeeded to the presidency on the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt less than three months later. In his first months in office he oversaw the end of the war in Europe, made the decision to use the atomic bomb against Japan, and helped found the United Nations. His administration launched the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan, oversaw the Berlin Airlift and the creation of NATO, desegregated the armed forces, and led the nation into the Korean War, and his upset victory over Thomas E. Dewey in 1948 remains one of the most famous in American political history. …
