Hardcover. Condition: Good. First. THE FIRST BOOK WHOLLY ILLUSTRATED BY REDOUTÉ. First edition, unrecorded (?) issue on large paper. Three volumes. Paris: Pierre Didot l'Ainé, 1799[1804?]. Broadsheet folio (20" x 12 13/16", 509mm x 325mm). [Full collation available.] With 144 plates (apparently complete) in toto, all stipple-engraved and printed in colors à la poupée. Bound in contemporary half-calf over marbled paper. On the spines, 6 raised bands. Title gilt to red sheep in the second panel. All edges of the text-block sprinkled black; the fore-edges with reserved leaves (i.e., leaves were applied to mask the fore-edges when sprinkled and then removed). Split at the hinges (the front hinge of vol. II tender), with some loss to the heads and tails; vol. III re-backed with the original back-strip laid down. Worn generally, with some skinning to the marbled paper. Remnants of slips pasted over the publisher to each title-page. Damp-stains to the upper and lower edges of most of vol. I. The first plate of vol. II coming up from its sewing, with some tanning, splits and chips at the edges. Large loss at the upper spine-corner of the vol. III title-leaf, with loss to eight letters. Very light scattered foxing besides; an internally bright example. Augustin Pyramus de Candolle (1778-1841) was born in Geneva, where his Huguenot family fled from Provence in the late XVIc. After studying law, a recommendation from Desfontaines allowing entrée to the herbarium of Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle, from which he published the present work on succulents ("plantes grasses" or "fatty plants" in French; "succulentus" in Latin can be rendered "full of juice"). L'Héritier de Brutelle had given the twenty-five-year-old Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), the Belgian-born "Raphael of Flowers," his first job illustrating plants for publication in the Stirpes novæ (1784-1789). The present work is the first to be fully illustrated by Redouté(s; two of the plates (those opposite text leaves 55 and 60) are signed by Henri Joseph Redouté). Dunthorne (Flower and Fruit Prints, sub loc.) calls the Plantes grasses "a most important work, and from the print point of view of technique and of pure colour printing, Redouté's masterpiece." Redouté would go on to be the greatest practitioner of the method. Stafleu-Cowan (Taxonomic Description, sub loc.) describes the Plantes grasses as "one of the nightmares of botanical bibliography," in part because they do not distinguish between the commoner Dugour et Durand issue and this rare Didot issue (cf. the de Belder set (Sotheby's London 27-28 April 1987, lot 58 albeit in 2 voll.), also complete with 144 plates published by Didot). The two are quite distinct textually. Issued, like most works of the period, in fascicles over many years -- the first in January of 1799 according to Stafleu-Cowan (despite the 1798 title-page in the Dugour et Durand issue), the twenty-eighth in 1805 -- the work suffered from quarrels between Candolle and Dugour and Durand. Consquently the projected work, running to 32 fascicles with more than 180 plates, has never been finished (fascicles 29-31 were published in quarto 1832; the 32nd fascicle remains unpublished). The present work is therefore a seemingly unrecorded variant -- also large-paper (cf. the Hunt set, which is 51cm); Stafleu-Cowan notes a print-run of 100 copies) -- published by Didot with uniform title-pages of 1799, and complete per the contents, which in vol. III ends with "FIN DU TOME TROISIEME ET DERNIER." Presumably Candolle (and Redouté) saw the impending problems with Dugour and Durand and wanted to issue a finished work via Pierre Didot l'aîné. Purchased at Sotheby's New York 12 December 1995, lot 221. (All Dugour et Durand): Dunthorne 241; Hunt, Redoutéana; Nissen, BBI 321; Pritzel 1463, Stafleu-Cowan 983.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE EMPRESS JOSEPHINE TO SIR HUMPHRY DAVY. EX-COLL. JOHN CAMPBELL, 2nd MARQUESS OF BREADALBANE AND OF HENRY ROGERS BROUGHTON, 2nd BARON FAIRHAVEN. First edition. Two parts in one volume. Paris: P. Didot l'ainé, [1812]1813. Folio (20 ¾" x 13 5/8", 526mm x 347mm). [Full collation available.] With 12 stipple-engraved plates after Redouté (10) and Bessa (2), color-printed à la poupée and hand-finished. Bound in contemporary quarter red morocco over red faux-grain cloth with a gilt fillet border. Title and author gilt to the front cover. On the spine, seven panels with gilt fillet dividers. Itle gilt to the second panel, author gilt to the third, date (1813) gilt to the tail. All edges of the text-block gilt. Worn at the hinges, and starting at the front. Cloth cockled, with some pulls and nicks at the back. Small patches of wear at the edges. Foxed generally, albeit more to the text than to the plates. With a long ink inscription in the hand of Lady Davy to the verso of the front binder's blank. Armorial bookplate of Lord Broughton to the front paste-down. Aimé Bonpland (1773-1858) gained renown in Europe for botanizing with Alexander von Humboldt in his excursion through the New World 1799-1804; his specimens were given to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle (MNHN), generating good-will and a pension from Napoleon. He eventually became a member of the entourage of the Empress Josephine, directing the gardens at Malmaison, her home in (what was then just west of) Paris. The present work is the second account of the plants at Malmaison, the first being Étienne Pierre Ventenat's 1803 Jardin de La Malmaison. The aim of the Plantes rares was to demonstrate the more exotic species, with a particular focus on American plants, many of which had been collected by Bonpland and planted in Josephine's garden. Both works were illustrated by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), also a protègé of Josephine's, conventionally known as the "Raphael of flowers." The present work was limited to 325 examples, extending eventually to 64 illustrations of which most are after Redouté, the balance after Pancrace Bessa (1772-1846). The present volume contains the first two parts of an eventual 11, issued between 1812 and 1817. The presentation in the hand of Jane, Lady Davy, explains well the provenance of the volume. [Transcription available.] Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829) was the great celebrity chemist of his day, pioneer of electrochemistry and the first to confirm that chlorine and iodine are elements. His trip to Paris was to collect the Prix du galvanisme, a prize meant to encourage electrical invention, from Napoleon. Davy's meeting with Empress Josephine -- dedicatee of the work -- at Malmaison took place on the 30th of November (just five months before her death), and included a tour of the gardens with his wife, Jane (née Kerr, 1780-1855), into whose collection the book passed after Sir Humphry's death. The volume, however, exited her collection as a gift to John Campbell, 2nd Marquess of Breadalbane, in 1847 as a remembrance of her stays at Taymouth Castle in the Scottish Highlands. Lord Breadalbane served as Lord Chamberlain of the Household to Queen Victoria. Henry Rogers Broughton (1900-1973), second baron, was the brother of the first Baron Fairhaven (Urban Huttleston Rogers Broughton), a title created for their father, Urban Hanlon Broughton, who died before it could be bestowed upon him. Their mother was the heiress of Henry H. Rogers of Standard Oil. Armed with their grandfather's fortune, the Broughtons were able to buy and to maintain Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire. The second Baron Fairhaven amassed one of the great collections of natural history books and art (partly donated to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge). The present volume was bought from the second part of his epochal sale at Sotheby's London (29 November 2022, lot 269). Nissen, BBI 207; Sitwell, Great Flower Books p. 51; Stafleu-Cowan 648.

He is of course most studied for his political philosophy, but his work on pedagogy, Emile, is perhaps even more influential. His pedagogical essays are continuous with his broader philosophical stance, and owe a great debt to nature and natural history in particular. Emile emphasizes the importance of an understanding about the natural world, both for its complexity and its simplicity. Rousseau was deeply curious about the world of plants (an engraving by Meyer of Rousseau "herborisant" or herbalizing illustrates this beautifully), and wrote the present treatise in the form of letters to a woman teaching her daughters botany. This epistolary structure is a very XVIIIc mode, drawing ultimately on Cicero. Pierre-Josephe Redouté (1759-1840) was a rather more professional botanist. He came into the favor of the Empress Josephine in particular, and illustrated the roses, irises and lilies (inter alia) in her gardens at Malmaison. He is widely esteemed as the greatest of all flower-painters, and in 1805 his powers were at their apex. It is therefore unsurprising that it is his name and not the great Swiss philosopher's that has been applied to the spine of the volume. The present item is the first state of the first edition, with pl. 54 mis-numbered "62" and without printed titles. Dunthorne 252; Nissen, BBI 1688; Pritzel 7824; Sitwell, Great Flower Books p. 134; Stafleu-Cowan 9688.

Pencil and watercolour on vellum, 21 x 15.8 cm, signed and dated at the lower right, sometime laid-down on paper, framed and glazed. A beautiful watercolour on vellum by the greatest flower painter of all time. Belgian born Redoutà (1759-1840) achieved success as a painter working for the French royal court as a tutor to Marie Antoinette and later from 1798 was appointed to paint the flowers of Malmaison by Josephine Bonaparte. His famous published works include 'Les Liliacà es' and 'Les Roses'. A fine example of Redoute's art, showing his delicacy and natural softness, a round and rich white rose together with two smaller specimens and four light red flowers.
