The 32 illustrated drawings include preliminary designs for his iconic and later-controversial murals at the Rincon Annex Post Office in San Francisco (begun 1941, completed 1948), his murals for the WPA Building at the 1939-40 New York World's Fair, and his interior designs for the legendary Café Society Uptown — the integrated New York jazz club where Billie Holiday first performed "Strange Fruit." A foundational catalogue for Refregier studies, WPA mural research, ACA Galleries history, and the broader documentation of Depression-era and wartime American leftist art. Published by A.C.A. Gallery, founded 1932 by Herman Baron, Stuart Davis, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Adolf Dehn — the leading gallery for American social realist and progressive artists of the 1930s-50s. Anton Refregier (1905-1979), Russian-born, RISD-trained, and a student of Hans Hofmann, settled in Woodstock, New York, after this 1942 ACA debut and became one of the defining muralists of the WPA era.
