Integra una combinación de discursos y de narraciones de milagros, algunos de ellos muy extraños, como cuando el niño Jesús mata con una maldición a algunos compañeros y a un maestro que le han ofendido. Debido a la imagen que ofrece de Jesús, la exégesis ha denigrado este apócrifo y lo ha asociado con ambientes heréticos. Reidar Aasgaard aborda este Evangelio del Pseudo-Tomás desde planteamientos tradicionales y modernos, ofreciendo nuevas hipótesis de interpretación. Contra el veredicto de que Infancia de Jesús es aberrante teológicamente, este estudioso demuestra que en dicho relato se reflejan ideas populares del cristianismo primitivo, las cuales se transmitían oralmente sobre todo entre los cristianos de zonas rurales. Asimismo, sostiene que fue concebido como una historia dirigida a los niños, siendo este dato decisivo para modificar su valoración exegética. El texto griego y la traducción (realizada directamente del griego siguiendo la interpretación del profesor Aasgaard) van acompañados de amplias notas y apéndices.
