November 1845 in Steinau an der Oder, besuchte das Gymnasium zu Brieg und studierte von 1864 bis 1869 in Tübingen, Jena und Breslau zuerst Chemie und beschreibende Naturwissenschaften, dann Mathematik, Physik und Astronomie. Während der Jahre 1869, 1870 und 1871 war er Observator an den Sternwarten in Breslau und Königsberg. 1870 erhielt er von der philosophischen Fakultät in Breslau den Preis für seine Arbeit über die Bestimmung der Höhen der Sternschnuppen und der Radiationspunkte ihrer Schwärme. Seit Ostern 1872 gehörte er als Lehrer dem Kgl. Gymnasium zu Ratibor an, wo er Michaelis 1876 Oberlehrer wurde. Von November 1873 bis Juli 1875 war er beurlaubt, zunächst zur Teilnahme an den wissenschaftlichen Vorarbeiten in Berlin für die Beobachtung des Venusdurchganges, sodann als Mitglied der deutschen Reichs-Expedition nach China, woran sich Audienzen bei Sr. Majestät dem deutschen Kaiser und Sr. Königl. Hoheit, dem Grossherzoge Friedrich Franz II. von Mecklenburg-Schwerin knüpften.
