Gesamthaft recht ordentliches Exemplar - - Barth 7303 (Kitt) - Digitalis. in e-rara (Reithard…; ebenso HBLS) - Seit 1830/1831 erfuhr die politische Entwicklung im Kanton Aargau eine fatale Zuspitzung hin auf unversöhnliche Konfrontation, die für viele andere eidgenössische Stände eine Katalysatorwirkung ausübte und zur Bildung von Sonderbünden führte. Als letzte Kulminationspunkte vor den Freischarenzügen (8. Dezember 1844, bzw. 31. März/1. April 1845) und dem Sonderbundskrieg von 1847 können die Klosteraufhebung im Aargau (Beschluss vom 13. Januar 1841), einerseits, die Berufung der Jesuiten nach Luzern (Beschluss des Luzerner Gr. Rates vom 24. Oktober 1844), andererseits, gesehen werden. - Nicht nur hinsichtlich der katholischen Bevölkerungsteile in den Kantonen, sondern auch für konservative Regierungen wie z.B. im Kanton Zürich zeichneten sich die zunehmenden Spannungen als äusserst bedrohlich ab, so dass sich die übergeordnete Bundesinstanz, die Tagsatzung, ernsthaft herausgefordert sah. Wir anerkennen daher den Werth vorliegender Arbeit. Dass wir indessen die darin vorkommenden Ansichten über katholische Institute, wie über den Jesuitenorden und die Klöster nicht theilen, werden wir kaum zu erwähnen brauchen" (etc., aus der 'Bemerkung der Verleger'). -Der Verfasser versteht sich als echter Liberaler, im Gegensatz zu den Radikalen, die für ihn "vom Krieg gegen Grundsätze [leben], denen sie kommunistisch gram sind, weil sie selber keine haben. Die Aufgabe des wahrhaft Liberalen dagegen ist es, der Kraft der Wahrheit vertrauend, seine positiven Standpunkte treu zu wahren [.] und dabei mit aller Gemüthsruhe dem Toben seiner Gegner entgegen zu stehen. Das will nun auch der Verfasser [.] wahrlich nicht, um für die Mönche und Nonnen, und auch nicht für die römisch-katholische Religion zu schreiben [.] sondern um die aargauischen Zustände im rechten Lichte zu beleuchten."
