Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No. 789 of a Limited Edition of 1,000. Royal octavo, [26cm/1025inches], full gilt-embossed sylvan-green cloth w/ matching slipcase pp. x, 322. Illustrated with numerous b-w halftones and pen & ink sketches. Please feel free to ask for particulars and/or additional photographs. . The publisher;s blurb notes: "Reitnauer writes in his book the combination of clarity and poetry about Africa and its animals. His description of the land, its vegetation and light demonstrates his writer's heart. Of a buffalo coming at them "with head high and bamboo pieces hanging from the crook of its horns," when the rifle shot hit its mark, "our old friend's time in the forest was over." Of an aged elephant, "The good tusk stuck out of its ancient, emaciated face like a stained, smooth tree branch." . Between safaris, Reitnauer learned about the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya first-hand, and these are mesmerizing pages. Indeed, his father had predicted Africa's future: "Millions will migrate from one slaughter to another, and anything white will have to join other wandering whites searching for a place to live." Perhaps too soon, Reitnauer acquired a first wife (and later a second one) and three children. In addition to a baby elephant, he added a pet cheetah "with the snobbery of a king, the charm of a charismatic lover, and the speed of a world-class sprinter," while his father handled the correspondence with safari clients.".
Hardcover. Condition: As New. First Limited to 1,000 Copies. 323 pp, ill. Son of an avid big game hunter in East Africa, Rietnauer grew up in the African bush learning everything he could about the big game and their habitat. He was both a hunter and a naturalist and his book provides an interesting view of the big game hunting sphere in Kenya & Tanzania. Limited to 1,000 signed, numbered slipcased copies. As new.

First Edition Signed
Condition: Book and slipcase like new. 2004 Long Beach, 1st edn, 322pp, b&w photos, ltd to 1,000 signed, numbered, & slipcased copies. Robert von Reitnauer was born on Christmas Day in 1933 on a farm in Mufindi, in the Tukuyu Highlands of the British Territory of Tanganyika, formerly German East Africa. His father, a German who had fought in the East African campaign of World War I, returned to East Africa from Germany in 1926 to forge a life for his family in the splendor of that isolated wilderness. But the reverberations from the drumbeats of Hitler's war were soon felt even in the remote highlands of East Africa, and Robert and his family were caught up in the maelstrom of anti-German rage. Even though his parents were fervent in their anti-Hitler beliefs, they lost everything, suffering through eight years of Diaspora. What remained a constant for Robert was his love of animals and hunting, and he had for a tutor an extraordinary man and an extraordinary hunter in his father. Robert started his career by hunting ivory, not necessarily on the right side of the law, and, on his own, with a loyal crew of ruffians, he shot elephants for himself that had ivory way over the 100-pound mark. Later, switching to the right side of the law, Robert became a professional hunter, guiding clients to some immense ivory as well as what is generally regarded as the biggest and heaviest leopard to ever come from Africa. Shot by Frank Hibben in 1969, this leopard measured 8 feet, 5 inches! The book is filled with fascinating personal anecdotes: including the time a Cape buffalo lay in wait for him and knocked him about so badly that he was in the hospital for months, or the time he pursued a cagey elephant with tusks weighing 125 and 127 pounds, and the time he participated in a tribal initiation test of the Watindiga bush people by planting a chalky handprint on the rear end of a rhino! This is the story of an immense land in the days before the truly big tuskers disappeared. A very good read.
