Bell'esemplare. E' questa la più completa raccolta dell'opera del Della Rena; si compone di 1 volume in-folio, contenente: Dall'esilio di Fl. Momillo Augustolo alla morte d'Ottone III. imperatore. Firenze, Cocchini, 1690. Dopo settant'anni, l'opera fu ripresa e continuata dal Camici, senza ordine di tempo, nè di successione, stampata da varie tipografie e condotta fino all'anno MCCLXXX XVIII (1298). Moreni II, 243 dice "rara" la storia fatta dal Della Rena "condotta fino al Sec. XI solamente, perchè la morte.non gli permise di pubblicare la seconda Parte data poi fuori in diversi tempi con abbondanti annotazioni, e documenti da Sig. Ippolito Camici Priore di Quarata in 22 (sic) opuscoli.". (Cfr. anche Lozzi, 5456; Brunet IV, 1271; Graesse VI, 80). Tutti questi opuscoli furono riordinati cronologicamente dall'ab. Agostino Cesarettio e pubblicati in Firenze (nella stamperia Albizziniana) nel 1789 in tomi VI, in-4°, comprendenti la storia dei Duchi dal 1004 al 1298. Fu fatta anche una ristampa in Tubinga, nel 1765, dal prof. Le Bret in lingua italiana. Graesse e Brunet fanno una descrizione erronea dell'opera; dividono in due la seconda parte (o serie), facendola apparire composta di 49 parti (26+23), il primo; 43 parti (20+23), il secondo. Evidentemente, pur sbagliando la data di pubblicazione, hanno sommato a quella del Camici, l'edizione riordinata da Agostino Cesaretti, uscita in Firenze nel 1789 e chi sa quali altri opuscoli. Comunque, la nostra raccolta è sì completa come lo sono le raccolte possedute dalle biblioteche fiorentine, cioè comprendono il periodo che va dal 1004 al 1298, mentre Moreni finisce con l'anno 1295. Mezza pergamena coeva con titolo in oro al dorso, piatti ricoperti di carta marmorizzata (piatto posteriore un po' iscurito). Mancanza restaurata al margine inferiore dell'occhietto, macchia al titolo, leggero alone al margine inferiore delle prime carte ed al margine superiore delle ultime, nel complesso bella copia genuina e marginosa. PRIMA EDIZIONE. ?Tre anni più tardi, nel 1690, vide la luce il frutto delle sue ormai decennali ricerche: la prima parte di Della serie dei più antichi duchi e marchesi della Toscana, in cui si ricostruiva, sulla base di un notevole apparato di spogli documentari, la sequenza cronologica dei primi signori della Toscana dai Goti a Ottone III. In quest'opera, che segue di appena nove anni il De re diplomatica di J. Mabillon, il D. non solo dimostra una sicura padronanza dei risultati acquisiti dall'erudizione bollandista e maurina, ma anche la piena coscienza della necessaria riforma nel metodo storico che ad essi consegue e di cui espone i caratteri essenziali nell'Introduzione: la distinzione fra autorità originali (?le prove d'autentichi documenti' e il ?testimonio di scrittori di que' tempi') e autorità derivate (gli ?accreditati scrittori', cioè gli storici non contemporanei che non bisogna aver timore di smentire); l'importanza delle fonti extra letterarie (marmi, bronzi ecc.); la continua verifica e rimessa in questione dei risultati alla luce di nuove prove, secondo lo spirito di quel ?metodo sperimentale' galileiano di cui viene tessuto un entusiastico elogio (p. 14). A questo primo volume avrebbe dovuto seguire un secondo (fino all'imperatore Rodolfo I) e un terzo, costituito dall'apparato critico e dalle note. Rimasta invece incompiuta, l'opera venne continuata da Ippolito Camici che la editò in opuscoli (Firenze 1764-1775) poi raccolti, seguendo un più rigoroso ordine cronologico, da Agostino Cesaretti e pubblicati a Firenze nel 1789 in sei tomi. Le numerose edizioni attestano del successo e del credito di cui l'opera continuò a godere per molto tempo. Ad essa attinse anche il Leibniz (che definì il Della Rena ?diligens antiquitatuin ruspator') nella sua ricerca sulle origini della casa di Hannover" (D.
