(wiki) // Zwischen 1220 und 1230 schrieb Eike von Repgow den Sachsenspiegel in einem sehr lebendigen Stil. Dieses Rechtsbuch des Mittelalters, zuerst in Latein und dann in niederdeutscher Sprache verfaßt, fand ungemeine Verbreitung, da es auch allgemeine Beschreibungen des Rechtes seiner Zeit enthält und somit nicht auf Sachsen beschränkt blieb. Vorliegende Ausgabe enthält sowohl den Originaltext als auch die deutsche Übersetzung des Landrechtes, als Gewohnheitsrecht des Bauernvolkes, und die Ordnung seines Adels, das Lehnrecht. (Verlagstext) / . Der Sachsenspiegel war das erste deutsche Rechtsbuch und auch eines der ersten deutschen Prosawerke. Es ist der Versuch, das Recht der Sachsen aufzuzeichnen, zu systematisieren und zu vereinheitlichen. Darin liegt auch die große Leistung Eike von Repgows, denn bis dahin war Land- und Lehnrecht nicht kodifiziert und von Region zu Region aus dem Gewohnheitsrecht heraus unterschiedlich. Entstanden ist das Werk zwischen 1220 und 1230. Zu schließen ist dies auf Grund der Tatsache, dass der Landfrieden König Heinrichs VII. von 1221 erwähnt wurde vorausgesetzt, dass dies bereits im Primärwerk stand. Es gibt auch keinen Beleg dafür, dass Eike von Repgow den Sachsenspiegel ursprünglich lateinisch verfasst hatte. .
