Pamphlet. Condition: Good. First Edition. Important case argued before the Supreme Court regarding habeas corpus and the extent of the Supreme Court's reach, recently relevant in arguments regarding prisoners held at Guantanamo; Carpenter, a Wisconsin lawyer and politico, gained national recognition from this trial and was appointed Senator the year after; in the Senate he became a leading though controversial figure. Original publication, first printing. Pamphlet/paperback, original pale blue wraps, black titling. Removed from a bound collection of pamphlets, missing its spine but still soundly bound. Whole thing lightly creased, more noticable on the front cover and early pages, title page with a chunk torn out of the edge, light waterstaining (an improvised index tab was torn out), light wear otherwise, pages tanned. Text clean; 83 pages.
