Egypt and Syria formed the United Arab Republic in 1958, and although Syria withdrew in 1961, Egypt retained the name of UAR for itself until 1971. Desires for Pan-Arab unity, concerns over Palestine and unfolding events led to the idea being resurrected, with talks held between the UAR (Egypt), Syria and Iraq in Cairo during 6-17 April 1963. This publication, dated 17 April 1963, records the outcomes. It announces the Union (Federal State of the UAR), and describes its constitution, construction, and organisation.

The Pact was concluded in Arabic in Cairo on 22 March 1945 by the heads of the states of Syria, Transjordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt, and Yemen to strengthen close relations, respect each others' independence, and promote the welfare of all Arab states. This English translation contains its text, and names the delegations except Yemen, generally led either by Presidents of their Council of Ministers or Foreign Affairs Ministers, respectively Faris Al Khury, Samir Al Rifa Pasha, Arshad Al Umary, Yusuf Yasin, Abd Al Hamid Karami, and Mahmoud Fahmy. Annexes address the Palestine question and invite a Palestinian delegate to join "until this country enjoys actual independence"; a commitment to cooperate with non-member Arab states; and the appointment of the first Secretary General for a 2 year term named here as Abd Al Rahman Azzam Bey. This edition is apparently very rare, with Worldcat locating only one at Stanford.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Good. A vintage Hajj passport for an Egyptian woman making the journey from Almaza Airport to Jeddah in the early era of Hajj by air. Original black titled stapled brown card wraps 120x155mm. Printed in Arabic by the Amiri Press. pp1-12, 17-20 including wraps, in good used condition with official ink stamps, ms entries and annotations, and the bearer's b/w photo. Several leaves are perforated close to the spine to facilitate removal (typically vouchers for accommodation and transport in the Hejaz), which likely explains why pp13-16 are not present, although there are no stubs evident suggesting anything has been removed. Misrair (today's Egypt Air) is not named here, but it was awarded a contract to operate the first Hajj flights from Almaza Airport (Cairo) to Jeddah in 1937. Its initial operations were hampered by mechanical difficulties and WW2. During 1946-50 the vast majority of pilgrims were still arriving by sea. Air travel began to pick up in the 1950s with major growth in the 1970s. References highlighted below suggest that this document had not been fully updated for air travel, or at least gave the flexibility for part travel by sea. These include references to ship names, seaports (Suez, Yanbu / Jeddah), quarantines (Al Tur) etc. There is also reference to travelling by camel in the Hejaz (p9), which had apparently all but died out by 1950. p1 is the front cover / title page with ms entries including one stating "To Medina". p2 contains ink stamped b/w photo, bearer's particulars, and boxes for the departure from Suez and return from Jeddah or Yanbu (ink stamped with ms entry). pp3 and 17 are Currency Declarations (not filled). Almaza Airport has stamped p10 for the departure (26 July 1955) and p4 for the return (20 August 1955), and the Passport Office in Jeddah has stamped p10 twice presumably for arrival and departure. p5 has an unfilled table for accompanying children, and a signed table of fees and charges collected. p6 has tables confirming administrative arrangements. pp7-8 details Quarantine fees to be paid upon departure and return with unfilled action forms. p9 has a table listing fees paid including for Quarantine, and for travel in the Hejaz broken down by taxi, bus, lorry, and camel. p12 is blank. There is a partially faded Saudi ink stamp to p18. p19 contains an extract from the Ministerial Decree (1914) concerning health precautions pilgrims must observe on their return mentioning Al Tur and Suez. p20 is the back cover with ms annotations and 2 ink stamps one of which "By Plane".
