Second printing. Pictorial cloth hardcover; 331pp; illus. Tight and square in the attractive pictorial binding; Near Fine. A collection of biographical vignettes, aimed at middle- and high-school readers, on Maine authors and public figures, mostly written by members of the Maine Writers Research Club. Subjects include Kate Douglass Wiggin, Dorothea Dix, Sarah Orne Jewett, Artemus Ward, others; writers of the articles include Don C. Seitz, John Clair Minot, Laura E. Richards, others. This copy with a presentation inscription to "Gertrude / in memory of F.S.N.S. days, Lelia," dated 1931. "Lelia," presumably one of the members of the Club, has included a typewritten note adding information regarding the various Club authors anthologized here; she has also annotated the table of contents in pencil to note the places of residence of most of the authors listed. The "F.S.N.S." referenced would be the Farmington State Normal School (now Farmington State University); the giver is most likely Lelia M. Field, FSNS Class of '14; the recipient "Gertrude" could be any one of a number of FSNS graduates in the first decades of the twentieth century.
