" L'Histoire de la ville de Cherbourg, par Voisin-la-Hougue, fut composée dans l'intervalle de 1720 à 1740. Elle a été copiée et falsifiée par Mme Retau-Dufresne, qui la fit imprimer sous son nom en 1760, en un petit in-12 ; mais elle n'a jamais été publiée par son véritable auteur. Nous nous sommes servis du manuscrit autographe (.). Voisin-la-Hougue est le plus ancien historien de Cherbourg ; à ce titre on doit respecter sa mémoire, et ce motif seul nous eût décidé à la publication textuelle de son manuscrit. Mais un mérite qu'on ne contestera pas à Voisin-la-Hougue, c'est celui des recherches et de l'exactitude dans les faits et les détails, qualité si précieuse dans celui qui écrit l'histoire."
