Heinrich von Kleists in den Jahren 1809-1811 geschriebenem Schauspiel 'Prinz Friedrich von Homburg' liegt ein bedeutendes Ereignis der preußischen Ge…schichte zugrunde: der Sieg des Großen Kurfürsten Friedrich Wilhelm über die schwedische Armee in der Schlacht von Fehrbellin im Jahr 1675. Jedoch veränderte Kleist die Ereignisse und Charaktere der Personen. Wegen der ideologisch untragbaren Szene, die den Prinzen von Homburg, der einen Befehl missachtet, in nackter Todesangst kurz vor seiner Hinrichtung zeigt, konnte das Stück lange Zeit nicht aufgeführt werden (Uraufführung erst 1821). Hinter der Geschichte um Staatsräson, um die Herrschaft des Gesetzes anstelle von Willkür, um individuelle Entscheidungsfreiheit und Selbstbestimmung liegt die somnambule Welt des Prinzen, aus der heraus er zu seinen intuitiven Entscheidungen in der Wirklichkeit angetrieben wird. Das auffälligste Strukturmerkmal des Schauspiels ist die Rahmung der eigentlichen Handlung durch parallel gebaute Anfangs- und Schlussszenen, in denen der Prinz das Geschehen im Traum erlebt.
