Engr. font port. Contemp. full diced calf, spine ruled & with devices in gilt, green morocco labels a little chipped; corners rubbed, small dent on following board. Inscribed on the leading f.e.p. to Mr. de Micose [?], 'the gift of his aff.te aunt E.th Turner, 1820'. First published in 1818 under the title The King, and revised…for this second edition. The first few gatherings have been misbound, and instructions to the reader have been added in the margins in a contemp. hand. Also in a contemp. hand, on the recto of the frontispiece, a brief estimation of the late king: 'George the Third / Born & bred a Briton / Endeared to a brave, free, & loyal people / By his public virtues / By his pre-eminent example / of private worth, in all the relations of domestic life / by his uniform course of unaffected piety / and entire submission to the Will of Heaven'. The contents of the work is similarly reverent.
