Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. This is a Civil War-era copy of the "Historic Records of the Fifth New York Cavalry, First Ira Harris Guard, its Organization, Marches, Raids, Scouts, Engagements, and General Services During the Rebellion of 1861-1865, with Observations of the Author by the Way, Giving Sketches of the Armies of the Potomac and of the Shenandoah. Also, Interesting Accounts of Prison Life and of the Secret Service. Complete Lists of its Officers and Men" by Rev. Louis N. Boudrye. 1865 1st edition; S.R. Gray; Albany, New York. The book features full-page illustrations and engraved portraits (one portrait is missing). The book is an authoritative, first-hand regimental history chronicling the experiences, operations, and movements of the Fifth New York Volunteer Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. Written by the regiment's chaplain, it is a compilation of daily logs, observations, and primary documents written in the middle of wartime campaigns. Condition: Fading, soiling, staining to the cloth on the covers and spine. Cloth tears at the cover corners, and at the top and bottom edges of the spine. There is a crack at the front hinge between the frontispiece and title page resulting in the front cover being shaky. The back cover is securely attached. The frontispiece is present but is detached, and appears to have been clipped vertically along the outer edge (the engraving and facsimile handwriting are unaffected). Inscription written in old ink handwriting on the front end paper. Consistent foxing to the pages; heavier foxing on the engraved plates. A 1" strip of the top paper layer has peeled away from the rear pastedown. The page 75 illustrated plate is not present. The rear end paper has a small tear at the outer edge. The tissue guard over the page 233 plate has a piece missing at the outer edge. Overall in Fair condition - a perfectly good reading copy, but not a collector's copy due to the condition flaws.
