Head and foot of spine worn down, and the spine itself is darkened. Two tiny worn-through spots along the outer hinge joining the spine and front cover. The front endpaper is splitting along the… gutter, but the hinge itself is holding and the binding is secure for normal handling. Old owner's inscription in front, dated 1895. Light foxing on some pages, but text unmarked. A scarce account of Protestant missionary work among the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. Illustrated with occasional black and white plates.

Inscribed by the author to Meany and dated Nov. 29, 1889. Scarce thus. An account of Protestant missionary work among the Native Americans down at the south tip of Hood Canal. A core association copy, inscribed to the eminent historian. Meany's color bookplate, on the front pastedown, shows three knives in color: "Three Knives" was the name bestowed on Meany by Chief Joseph, symbolizing Meany's preeminent attributes of mind, heart and hand.
