First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Woodcuts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 256 pages; Self -published. HC in original ribbed brown cloth with decorative border ruling and devices stamped in blind. 1st edition. Formerly of the Westminster Theological Seminary Library with their bookplate at front and a small ink numeral stamp to recto of front illustrated title page. Soundly bound copy lacks the front free endpage; basic library type tape reinforcement to spine with crude title letters in manuscrip to tap spine. Cloth seems complete under tape. Boards rubbed with abrasion and mild fray at corners; boards peeking through cloth rubs over the top and bottom edges. Issued with an extra, engraved title page and illustrated with over 20 woodcuts on full page plates. Expected light toning and occasional mild soiling to pages. Sound and complete; reabcking suggested. Uncommon mid-19th century American anti-Catholic tract compiled and edited by an author with close relationship to the American Tract Society. Good only thus.

In issuing the present work, the editor trusts it will be the means of giving a new and powerful impulse to the cause of Protestant Christianity. It employs such language as will best express the idea desired to be conveyed, and carries home the truth with the greatest power. It studiously avoids every word or form of expression which might be considered an infringement of the laws of correct taste, but it cannot be promised it will not give offense to any, since probably no man could do justice to this long-continued and deeply embittered controversy with papal Rome, without giving some offense to the over-fastidious, or weak and superstitious minds.
